Gastric sleeve procedures | Cirugia de adelgazamiento

The procedure is conducted under general anaesthesia; a dose of antibiotics and a dose of subcutaneous heparin are administered previously, in order to prevent infections and thrombosis, respectively. The patient will continue receiving a heparin injection every day of hospitalization, and up to 30 days after discharge from hospital.

The patient will wear elastic compression stockings during surgery, and until the day after surgery.

The intervention is conducted through laparoscopy, introducing the surgical instruments through five little 1.2 cm incisions on the skin. Sometimes there is bleeding during the procedure, due to gastric vessels or spleen damage, and a blood transfusion might be required. After the procedure has been completed, an intra-abdominal drain is placed close to the stomach; sometimes, other accessory drains are left at subcutaneous level. A urinary catheter and a nasogastric tube are used during the procedure, and withdrawn when it has been completed.

  • The patient may start walking around 24 hours after the intervention.
  • After 48 hours, an X-ray study is conducted, and oral tolerability with liquids will start.
  • After 72 hours, the abdominal drain is removed, and after indications for diet and supplements (vitamins, iron, calcium), the patient will be discharged from hospital.
