The evolution for both Virginia and myself has been good. As of today, my weight ranges from 68 kg to 70 kg, depending on the physical activity I do, but I am stable at that weight. Virginia’s weight fluctuates between 54 kg and 56 kg, also depending on physical activity and diet, but always within that range. I came down from a weight of 140 kg and my wife from 107 kg. As for our progress, it has been great without complications beyond the occasional discomfort when eating too quickly, and not much more. Being careful with our diet, especially with the intake of vegetables and watching fat content, as well as maintaining physical exercise, has been important. As you can see, this is my before and after, quite a change, isn’t it? I have to thank the team of surgeons who operated on me, because thanks to them I am now happy. I am an asthmatic girl and before the surgery, I couldn’t lead a normal life; I was unable to go for a walk because I would suffocate, I couldn’t climb stairs, and I struggled to tie my shoes.

The most painful thing for me was not being able to play in the park with my son.

I used to have about 4 hospital admissions a year due to my asthma, which was worsened by my obesity. I arrived at Dra. Hernández’s office quite affected both physically and emotionally after trying many diets, which unfortunately did not work for me to lose weight in the long term. I had my decision clear and the results are obvious: I entered the operating room at the end of October 2014 weighing almost 150 kg, and currently, I am 60 kg lighter. I placed myself in the hands of their team of professionals (nutritionist, psychologist… etc.), and the truth is that the change has been tremendous. I am a new man and it has changed my life.

The postoperative period went very well. Within three days, I was already home and I didn’t have any discomfort whatsoever. Obviously, I had to put in a lot of effort, but I felt very supported by their team at all times. The comprehensive approach they take to this process is essential. It’s not just another diet. I am Maribel, and I want to share my experience of how I went from complete bitterness and despair to the state of happiness and emotional balance that I am in now since July 11, 2014.

I am a very organized person, who needs to have everything under control, and the dietary imbalance I was subjecting myself to made me feel very bad and caused me a great sense of absolute failure, which led to an anxiety that overwhelmed me and made me spiral down.

Before my surgery, I weighed almost 103 kilograms. I know there are many people in the same situation I was in, and thanks to the gastric bypass surgery performed by Dr. Carmen Hernández, her support, her advice, and the way she and her team guided me, along with my family’s support and my own effort, I have managed to overcome this. And if I could do it, anyone facing the same situation can too. Now I weigh 43 kilograms less, I’ve regained my health, the desire to be present, confidence, and I believe in myself again.

I was afraid of the surgery, not due to a lack of information, because Dr. Hernández explained everything to me: it was a minimally invasive surgery, the steps that would be taken, that I would be back to normal life in no time, the recovery would be very quick as would the satisfaction, and it was exactly as she had explained. But I was afraid of the unknown, of whether I would be able to do it right, of failing… I was afraid of myself and of not being able to succeed… I quickly lost the fear and had to believe because by following the guidelines one by one, step by step, everything was much easier than I could have imagined.

The support of the family is very important, and the whole family must be involved since you have made a decision that will be definitive; you have decided to change and to bet on yourself, and if you feel supported by your loved ones, everything is easier to face, more pleasant, more bearable. Seeing how you change and how your family takes pride in your effort and your “success” makes you feel very confident that you have done the best thing, and the feeling of “well done” is shared among everyone, which, at least for me, was and is very important.

It’s been almost 2 years since my surgery, and I still find myself surprised when I look at myself some mornings, I have not yet gotten used to being another person, both physically and psychologically, and I like that, I don’t want to get used to it, I want to keep being pleasantly surprised, or meeting people who haven’t seen me for a long time and have them struggle to recognize me, and it’s not out of vanity; it’s to see that I have achieved and maintained it, and that encourages me to keep going.

My situation was desperate; I found myself in a critical situation, not wanting to continue with my life. Socially, being obese is very complicated.
I ate and felt bad, and because I was feeling bad, I ate, until I reached severe morbid obesity, weighing 160 kilos and wearing a size 60. I also had diabetes, hypertension, and couldn’t climb stairs…

That was the moment when I decided to call you for help. I spoke with you and you calmed me down, gave me hope, and I regained the will to live.

The recovery after surgery was perfect and within 4 days I was at home leading almost a normal life.
Two years have passed and now I am no longer diabetic, I don’t have hypertension, I have regular menstrual cycles, I can climb stairs, run, etc.
Now, I am no longer the frightened woman; I am confident in myself, I look in the mirror and I don’t hang my head.

I have lost 78 kilos and I have a new life.

My experience with my surgery.
I hated pictures! Why? Because I didn’t like the way I looked. And it was a photo that made me react, “the before picture.” I always remember my life being on a diet, but after a two-year depression, I lost control due to my anxiety.

The medication also didn’t help my metabolism, I knew I had to do something because otherwise, from the 110 kg (242 lbs) I weighed, I would just keep gaining more and more, and I didn’t know how to stop it, which caused me more and more anxiety.

I contacted my angel Carmen, and she told me that with the amount of weight I had to lose, it would be practically impossible to do it on my own. She told me about the gastric bypass and explained the benefits to me. I made up my mind at that moment. It has been the best decision I have ever made in my life, it will be a year now in April without complications or discomfort.
